Anxiety

Despite decades of research, first-line treatments for anxiety and stress-related disorders—such as monoamine-based medications and cognitive-behavioral therapy—remain limited in effectiveness, with many patients experiencing only partial relief and requiring ongoing treatment. Traditional pharmacotherapy, largely unchanged since the 1950s, does not fundamentally alter underlying neurobiology. In recent years, however, there has been growing interest in psychedelics and psychedelic-assisted therapy as potential breakthroughs for treating mood, anxiety, trauma-related, and substance use disorders.

Johns Hopkins researchers have discovered that use of the synthetic psychedelic 5-methocy-N,-N-dimethyltryptamine (5-MeO-DMT) appears to be associated with unintended improvements in self-reported depression and anxiety when given in a ceremonial group setting.

New research into applications of psychedelics represents one of the most important initiatives in psychiatry and brain science in recent decades.

Anxiety disorders are a common mental health problem and can be treated with psychological therapies and drugs. Research to date shows that a short course of psychedelic drugs, when combined with psychotherapy, can be as effective as existing treatments in reducing anxiety symptoms, and that this effect can be sustained for months. Clinical trials exploring the role of psychedelics are ongoing.

A study found that a single dose of LSD may help people dealing with generalized anxiety disorder. Biotech company MindMed said Thursday it received breakthrough therapy status from the FDA for its work researching the use of the hallucinogen LSD to treat mental health issues. The news comes a week after Cleveland Clinic entered its second study in psychedelic treatments for mental health disorders. Long known as a recreational drug, the component in "magic mushrooms" known as psilocybin, has been studied for nearly two decades to help those with mental health disorders. The treatment occurs in academic medical settings in combination with psychotherapy for treating addiction, depression and other mood disorders.

Background: Anxiety disorders are commonly diagnosed and cause substantial functional impairment. A mixture of pharmacologic and psychosocial treatments currently exists, but these treatments are not always tolerable and effective. For patients with anxiety resistant to standard therapy, psychedelics may be a promising alternative. This review assesses the therapeutic benefits and safety of psychedelics in treating anxiety disorders.

Based on the evidence of symptom reduction and safety, the current literature (2011 to 2021) shows that psychedelics could be considered for treating clinician-diagnosed anxiety disorders. Psychedelics may provide an alternative therapeutic option for patients resistant to current standard treatments.

LSD (c) has shown mental health potential since April 19, 1943, the day Albert Hofmann, who first synthesized LSD, accidentally dosed himself and immediately understood its potential for understanding human consciousness. Hofmann could tell from the start that LSD might have therapeutic benefits, taken mindfully and within a safe context. After decades of psychedelic prohibition, LSD is once again emerging in research as a powerful tool in mental health treatment. In March 2024, the FDA granted Breakthrough Therapy status to Mind Medicine (MindMed) Inc.’s LSD compound, MM120, for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).
